NSW police officer suspended after being charged with domestic violence offences

The 28-year-old senior constable is facing five assault charges, three counts of stalking and two counts of harassment

A police officer has been suspended with pay while he waits to face court charged with domestic violence offences.

The 28-year-old senior constable was released on bail to face Picton local court on 16 May.

He was first charged on Wednesday with accessing or modifying restricted data 14 times, NSW police said in a statement.

Following further investigation, he was arrested on Thursday and charged with five domestic violence related assaults, assault occasioning actual bodily harm, three counts of stalking or intimidation intending fear of physical harm, and two counts of using a carriage service to menace, harass or offend.

The senior constable came under investigation after reports of multiple alleged domestic violence offences in November last year.

It comes amid intense political focus on tackling domestic violence and violence against women more widely following high-profile cases such as the killing of Ballarat woman Samantha Murphy and that of Molly Ticehurst in Forbes.

NSW police are also under renewed scrutiny following the alleged killing in March of Jesse Baird and Luke Davies in Sydney by serving police officer Beau Lamarre.
