Judge Was ‘Noticeably Uncomfortable’ While Stormy Daniels Testified About Sexual Encounter with Trump

Judge Juan Merchan was “noticeably uncomfortable” in court on Tuesday as Stormy Daniels testified she had a sexual encounter with Donald Trump, according to CNN’s Kaitlan Collins, who was at the proceedings.

Trump has denied the affair and pleaded not guilty to 34 counts of falsifying business records in what the prosecution says was an effort to pay off Daniels to silence her before the 2016 election.

Daniels’ testimony became so detailed and graphic that at one point she described a sex position she and Trump were allegedly in. She also testified that she spanked Trump with a rolled-up magazine.

Judge Juan Merchan sustained several objections from Trump’s attorney and appeared “irritated” by Daniels’ over-sharing.

“It did seem as though Judge Merchan was frustrated with the prosecutors,” CNN’s Jake Tapper observed to Collins. “Tell us about that.”

“He was noticeably uncomfortable as she was going into some of the details,” Collins said. “Really, it was Stormy Daniels’ prerogative here, though. I mean, the prosecution was asking her pretty open-ended questions. ‘Tell us about that interaction with Trump, or ‘Explain what the two of you talked about there.’ And she would take those opportunities to go into intense detail. I mean it was incredibly detailed.”

Collins reported that Trump passed notes to his attorneys, who began objecting to the testimony.

“And instead of doing what he has been doing throughout a lot of this trial where the judge has kind of rejected their objections, he was sustaining them,” she continued. “He was going along with them. And he took a moment to say something to them and to ask – after the brief morning break – to ask the prosecution to make sure they were keeping her to answer just directly what is at the heart of this.”
