A new 'politmonitor' survey reveals that inflation, climate change, and security are the top concerns for voters in Luxembourg as they prepare for the European elections, with over 70% expressing interest in the upcoming vote.

In light of the upcoming European elections, to be held in Luxembourg on 9 June, ILRES, in partnership with RTL and Wort, commissioned a new 'politmonitor' survey to feel the pulse of eligible voters in the Grand Duchy. While the first part focuses on the candidates running for office, the second part zooms in on a list of wider issues, ranging from general concerns to concrete EU policies.

People's concerns

Inflation is the number one issue on people's minds ahead of the European elections, with 53% of respondents voicing concerns over the current situation. Climate change and security are tied at 51%, followed by social issues in third with 48% of people worried.

When it comes to the most pressing demands directed at EU policy makers, environmental concerns top the table with 22%. Here, safety and defence only come in second at 19%, followed by inflation in third with 19&.

Interest in the European elections

More than 70% of respondents said that they are interested in the upcoming elections, with interest notably rising with increased age. Over 80% of over-55-year-olds expressed interest.

Only 6% of respondents said that they were indifferent to the vote.

EU policies

The majority of survey respondents share a pro-European stance. The proposition for a joint migration policy, including the obligation to take in refugees, is widely popular with more than 70% agreeing. The idea of a European army finds similar acceptance.

However, only two thirds of people support weapons deliveries to Ukraine. 45% people believe that the EU should expand further.
