SWFL women’s: Busselton start quest for premiership redemption with 106-point hammering of Carey Park

Busselton’s women’s side made an imposing start to their quest for premiership redemption with a 106-point hammering of Carey Park in Saturday’s early game at Bovell Park.

Coming off a heartbreaking loss in last year’s grand final after an utterly dominant regular season, the Magpies showed they will again be among the competition’s leading teams, booting 16 goals while holding the visitors scoreless.

The Panthers showed plenty of early intensity at the coalface but were made to pay for some errant ball movement, with the hosts booting three goals and taking a 21-point lead into the first break.

Christie Daniels began to assert some dominance in the ruck for Busselton in the second term, allowing Isabella Hancock to get first access to the ball and win several driving clearances.

In a 10-minute spell resting forward, Magpies’ skipper Katisha Barrett took full advantage of her side’s ascendancy in the middle of the ground, booting four quick goals to extend the half-time advantage out to 53 points.

Carey Park’s effort never wavered through the second half but the Magpies continued to pile on the pain by registering another eight goals across the third and fourth quarters.

Barrett finished with five goals on the day and Gemma Wharton chimed in with four as one of seven individual goal kickers for the winners, while Carey Park defender Amber Strachan never stopped battling despite the inevitability of the result — which ended 16.10 (106) to 0.0 (0).
