A Brit student left fighting for her life after being gored by a 2,000lb bison has now been left paralysed and stranded in the USA as her health insurance plans to withdraw support.
Amelia Dean, 19, was traveling through South Dakota during her gap year road trip when the beast attacked her and tore the femoral artery in her left thigh during the shocking attack on June 16.
The beast began charging towards her from around 100 yards away and launched 15ft into the air - leaving her with a punctured artery that caused incredible damage. Following the attack, the teen was left fighting for her life in hospital.
Her parents Matthew and Jacqueline launched a GoFundMe to raise £140,000 ($171,000) to transfer their daughter to the Mayo Clinic in Rochester, Minnesota.
So far they have raised £60,000.
They had hoped to raise the required amount of money which would allow Mia to be given extensive treatment, despite her being under the American healthcare system since the horror attack.
However despite raising the cash, a shocking healthcare insurance rule means that Mia and her family have been left with a grim decision.
Her insurance told the family that they plan to withdraw support, with the family adding on her gofundme page: "The insurance company has given us an ultimatum: to fly Mia home by air ambulance this weekend, after which they will withdraw funding for her case."
The heartbreaking decision the family have been left with is to fly her home to Brockham in Surrey on an insurance-funded air ambulance this weekend, or for her to stay in the US.
However, flying the teen home would be difficult as no doctor has given her the green light for such a journey. The cost of an air ambulance has also been set at a whopping £100,000 ($121,000), which insurance will cover only this weekend coming.
Her parents said: "If we choose to stay in the US and follow this route we are then potentially left stranded.
"With so many unknowns for her future treatment needs, we feel we have little choice but to cancel Mia's appointments at the Mayo Clinic next week.
"We may have to consider coming back to the Mayo Clinic, should it become necessary.
"It's gutting, but we have to do what is best for Mia's recovery with so little hard information available."
And if Mia would stay in the states, she will receive 'world-class specialist treatment in the peripheral nerve field' - but without health insurance and dependent on the generous donations of others to fund her care.
The family have already expressed that the chances of their daughter making a full recovery are greater in the US, but they are afraid they will be unable to raise the funds in time.
Mia's parents said the health insurance had already paid for the femoral artery bypass, but will not pay for the initial examination of her nerve injury by the specialist at the Mayo Clinic.
The avid dancer was also left in critical condition as the huge bison - that can weight anywhere from 300kg to up to one tonne - completely severed her femoral artery, and caused catastrophic damage to her tibial and peroneal nerves.
Her parents said: "Since launching this fundraiser, Mia's situation has changed and we have had to make some difficult decisions.
"Our daughter's health is our top priority and we want to get her home as safely as possible.
"Now the insurance company has given us an ultimatum: to fly Mia home by air ambulance this weekend, after which they will withdraw funding for her case."
Mia will need complex nerve grafts and potentially a number of surgeries to help her recover.
Recalling the horrifying ordeal, her parents said: "We are beyond fortunate that our daughter is still breathing, as she should have bled out in two to eight minutes after the severed artery and the ambulance didn't arrive for 20 minutes.
"It is a miracle that she is alive today. We believe that God put a veil of protection over Mia."
