Two people have died in a horror car crash in Brisbane’s Legacy Way Tunnel, while another person is fighting for life.

The shocking three-car crash struck the eastbound section of the tunnel about 3.10pm, the Queensland Ambulance Service said, leaving traffic banked up as emergency services raced to the scene.

Paramedics assessed multiple critical patients, with a man aged in his 50s and a woman aged in her 20s dying at the scene.

Another woman is now undergoing emergency surgery at the Royal Brisbane and Women’s Hospital for critical injuries.

A black Audi S3, a silver sedan and a small white truck collided in the tunnel.

Police believe the black Audi was travelling north in the tunnel when it crashed into the sedan, which then crashed into the truck.

Queensland Police Inspector Steve Crabbe, addressing reporters on Wednesday night, said the crash scene was “extensive” and spread out for “several hundred metres”.

“The scene was extensive and obviously the tunnel will be assessed for any damage,” he said.

“The scene was over several hundred metres, involving three vehicles and extensive traffic delays were involved.”

Inspector Crabbe said firefighters were required to cut people out of vehicles.

Emergency services also struggled to attend the scene because of congestion at the mouth of the tunnel.

“Fortunately, there were a number of police motorbikes that were able to get to the scene quickly,” he said.

Inspector Crabbe said the male driver of the Black Audi had died and the female passenger of the silver sedan had died.

The female driver of the silver sedan is undergoing surgery.

The driver of the truck suffered serious injuries but was expected to survive, he said.

“Forensic crash unit are currently at the scene and are investigating,” he said.

“CCTV footage is being reviewed, anyone who has information is requested to contact police.

“Particularly in relation to the driving manner of the Black Audi.”

The Legacy Way tunnel links the Western Freeway at Toowong in the city’s east with the inner-north.

Inspector Crabbe said he expected the tunnel would reopen “sometime tonight”.
