Perth Scorchers face a selection dilemma ahead of Saturday’s Big Bash League decider with seamer Matthew Kelly and spinner Peter Hatzoglou fighting for the final spot in the XI.

Speedster Lance Morris has played his final game for the tournament, heading to Sydney after Saturday’s seven-wicket win over Sydney Sixers to link up with the Australian Test squad ahead of the India tour.

Kelly will be available for selection after missing the Sixers qualifier clash due to concussion protocols, the result of a freak incident in the last home-and-away round against Melbourne Renegades.

The Claremont-Nedlands product has played seven of a possible 15 games, but five of eight at Optus Stadium where he’s taken six wickets.

Leg-spinner Hatzoglou has featured 10 times this tournament but been wicket-less in his four appearances in Perth in BBL12.

He was picked ahead of Kelly, who was an unused X-Factor substitute, in last season’s grand final victory over the Sixers at Marvel Stadium.

The Scorchers bowled 20 overs of seam against the Sixers on Saturday with spin-bowling all-rounder Cooper Connolly and part-time off-spinner Ashton Turner not getting a bowl.

English seamer and Saturday’s bowling hero David Payne stayed away from the Scorchers’ fan day at Forrest Chase on Monday because of the flu but is expected to make a full recovery in the next few days and be available for the final.

Payne pushed through the virus to take three wickets including the competition’s biggest scalp in Steve Smith with a brilliant diving caught-and-bowled effort.

Star paceman Jhye Richardson (hamstring) was effectively ruled out by captain Turner after Saturday’s win.

“I think Jhye’s chances are pretty slim,” Turner said.

“I’d be surprised if we see him next weekend... He’s too important to put unnecessary risk on his body. So I think he’s less chance than more chance of playing, which is disappointing for us.

“With Lance missing next weekend there’s an opportunity, whether it be for Matt Kelly or Peter Hatzoglou.”
