A sunglasses-wearing skull kept as a mantelpiece ornament belonged to a 79 year-old man who went missing in 2012. Investigators said Monday that the skull found in Morgan County, Tennessee belonged to Junior Willie McCann.

The bone is said to have been found by a local last March, with that person then displaying it as a ghoulish trinket, complete with shades. Sheriff’s deputies were alerted to the discovery, and seized it for DNA tests, which later confirmed it belonged to McCann.

It is unclear whether the person who found the skull realized that the macabre keepsake was real, or who it may have belonged to. Morgan County Sheriff’s Office say they have been made aware of rumors that McCann was murdered by an unnamed loved one who has since died themselves.

A spokesman said: ‘Speculation and rumor has been that Junior Willie McCann was possibly killed by a family member who is now deceased as well.’

Morgan County Sheriff’s Office continues to investigate, and has appealed for anyone with further information on McCann’s disappearance to come forward.
