UPDATE: The Airport and Midland train line is back up and running more than seven hours after a fire halted operations on Monday afternoon.

Commuters have been told to expect big delays after the Midland and Airport lines were closed when a train caught fire on Monday afternoon.

Around 12.30pm, a diesel train that was testing the Midland line burst into flames near the Mount Lawley station after a fault in the engine created sparks.

Firefighters were called to the scene after the five technicians on board were unable to put the fire out.

The technicians evacuated and were uninjured in the blaze.

It took five fire crews around 30 to 45 minutes to put out the fire.
