US Rep. Summer Lee defeats primary challenger Bhavini Patel in Pennsylvania's 12th Congressional District

In a nationally watched race in a deep-blue seat, freshman U.S. Rep. Summer Lee secured the Democratic nomination in Pennsylvania’s 12th congressional district.Lee beat challenger Bhavini Patel, an Edgewood councilmember, in the primary election on Tuesday. Lee had 61% of the vote to Patel’s 39%, with 98% of precincts reporting."I think that it sends a message that progressive values win the day every day," Lee said Tuesday night. "When we talk and lift up those values, that we care about working-class people, that we care about marginalized people, and housing, and clean air and clean water, that's what people care about. That's what they want us to focus on."Patel ran a more moderate campaign compared to Lee’s progressive stances.The war between Israel and Hamas became a flashpoint in the race, with Patel tacking onto the pro-Israel movement while Lee called early on for a cease-fire.Patel announced the end of her campaign on the social media app X shortly after the race was called Tuesday night.“This race was about so much more than me or my opponent. It was about passing common sense laws that put money in working families’ pockets. It was about standing up to hate and stopping antisemitism. And it was about making sure President Biden gets re-elected in November," Patel said. Lee won election to Congress in 2022. She had previously served two terms in the Pennsylvania state House.She will face James Hayes in the November election. Hayes ran unopposed for the Republican nomination.District 12 covers most of Pittsburgh as well as parts of southeast Allegheny County and western Westmoreland County."This movement is stronger than whatever they are going to throw at us," Lee said in her victory speech Tuesday night. "Our movement is stronger than every GOP billionaire that exists. Our movement is stronger than any wedge issue, is stronger than any opportunist, is stronger than everybody who wants to say that the power of the people is not stronger than the people in power."
