Tottenham came from behind to beat Southampton as Heung-min Son’s last-minute penalty earned Ryan Mason a winning start as interim head coach.

The visitors were firmly on the first half and deservedly went ahead through Danny Ings’s fine header, beating Hugo Lloris via the inside of the far post.

Spurs failed to register a shot on target before half-time - a first in the Premier League this season - but Mason’s half-time team talk worked as Gareth Bale curled home an equaliser on the hour mark.

Heung-min Son looked to have put Spurs ahead as the game headed towards a conclusion, beating Alex McCarthy inside the area, only for VAR to rule out the goal as an offside Lucas Moura was judged to have blocked the goalkeeper’s line of sight.

VAR went from villain to hero in the final minute as Spurs won a penalty following a review, Sergio Reguilon being fouled on the line, and Son slammed home the winner in the 90th minute.
