US President Joe Biden on Saturday poked fun at himself, but took sharp aim at his election rival, former US president Donald Trump, at the annual White House Correspondents’ Association dinner, as protesters outside demonstrated against the conflict in Gaza.
A long list of VIP guests, including journalists and celebrities from Chris Pine to Molly Ringwald, arrived in black-tie attire as more than 100 protesters confronted attendees in front of the Washington Hilton hotel chanting “shame on you” and other slogans.
Inside, the topic of Gaza was far from the lips of Biden and the evening’s comedian, Colin Jost of Saturday Night Live, who roasted Biden for his age and occasional stumble on the Airforce One stairs.

“I would like to point out it’s after 10pm, Sleepy Joe is still awake, while Donald Trump has spent the past week falling asleep in court every morning,” Jost joked, referring to the former president’s appearances at his New York hush money trial last week.
Amid some self-mockery and ribbing of the press, the 81-year-old president took sharp-elbowed jabs at his 77-year-old presumptive November election rival, quipping that “age is the only thing we have in common. My vice president actually endorsed me.”
Jost and Biden struck a more serious tone in addressing what many Americans feel is a politically fraught moment, with Biden telling attendees Trump’s rhetoric was a danger particularly after the January 6, 2021, attack on the Capitol, and that “the stakes couldn’t be higher.”

Jost, a longtime writer and actor with NBC’s Saturday Night Live who is married to actress Scarlett Johansson, also in attendance, recalled fondly that his recently deceased grandfather had voted for Biden “because you are a decent man.”
“My grandpa voted for decency and decency is why we are all here tonight,” he told the president.
Biden’s appearance at the banquet is in keeping with longstanding tradition for the event, in which the president and the national media gather for a roast of the US leader — an annual gala that was interrupted during the Trump administration.
“The 2024 election is in full swing and yes age is an issue,” Biden said. “I am a grown man, running against a six-year-old.”
If it was all laughs inside, the scene outside the hotel remained serious, with protesters at one point unfurling an enormous, multi-story Palestinian flag from a top-floor window, as others congregated on the road below holding placards, chanting and shouting from bullhorns.
Biden’s every move has been shadowed for months by protesters angry over US support for the Israeli military offensive in Gaza. He has been met by shouts of “Genocide Joe” and noisy calls for an immediate ceasefire.
More than two dozen Palestinian journalists this week issued an open letter urging their US colleagues to boycott the dinner.
“You have a unique responsibility to speak truth to power and uphold journalistic integrity,” the letter said. “It is unacceptable to stay silent out of fear or professional concern while journalists in Gaza continue to be detained, tortured and killed for doing our jobs.”
The New York-based Committee for the Protection of Journalists has said that at least 97 journalists — including 92 Palestinians — have been killed since war erupted on Oct. 7 with Hamas’s invasion of southern Israel. At least 16 others have been wounded.
DISPUTED WATERS: The Philippines accused China of building an artificial island on Sabina Shoal, while Beijing said Manila was trying to mislead the global community The Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) is committed to sustaining a presence in a disputed area of the South China Sea to ensure Beijing does not carry out reclamation activities at Sabina Shoal (Xianbin Reef), its spokesperson said yesterday. The PCG on Saturday said it had deployed a ship to Sabina Shoal, where it accused China of building an artificial island, amid an escalating maritime row, adding two other vessels were in rotational deployment in the area. Since the ship’s deployment in the middle of last month, the PCG said it had discovered piles of dead and crushed coral that had been dumped
Experts have long warned about the threat posed by artificial intelligence (AI) going rogue, but a new research paper suggests it is already happening. AI systems, designed to be honest, have developed a troubling skill for deception, from tricking human players in online games of world conquest to hiring humans to solve “prove-you’re-not-a-robot” tests, a team of researchers said in the journal Patterns on Friday. While such examples might appear trivial, the underlying issues they expose could soon carry serious real-world consequences, said first author Peter Park, a postdoctoral fellow at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology specializing in AI existential safety. “These
The most powerful solar storm in more than two decades struck Earth on Friday, triggering spectacular celestial light shows from Tasmania to the UK — and threatening possible disruptions to satellites and power grids as it persists into the weekend. The first of several coronal mass ejections (CMEs) — expulsions of plasma and magnetic fields from the sun — came just after 4pm GMT, according to the US National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration’s Space Weather Prediction Center. It was later upgraded to an “extreme” geomagnetic storm — the first since the “Halloween Storms” of October 2003 caused blackouts in Sweden and damaged
Using virtual-reality (VR) headsets, students at a Hong Kong university travel to a pavilion above the clouds to watch an artificial intelligence (AI)-generated Albert Einstein explain game theory. The students are part of a course at the Hong Kong University of Science and Technology (HKUST) that is testing the use of “AI lecturers” as the AI revolution hits campuses around the world. The mass availability of tools such as ChatGPT has sparked optimism about new leaps in productivity and teaching, but also fears over cheating, plagiarism and the replacement of human instructors.
