A 19th century Maine getaway overlooking Penobscot Bay was just named among the best new hotels on the planet.
The 11-room Norumbega Inn in Camden, Maine, billed as a “castle by the sea,” was recently listed among the 100 best new and renovated hotels in the world by Travel + Leisure. The 1886 building is on the National Register of Historic Places.
The inn reopened in May after an eight-month renovation by new owners Will Tims and Brett Haynie. The seasonal property was transformed into year-round accommodations, with reimagined guest rooms, new common spaces, and dining and beverage options.
Guests enjoy a gourmet breakfast each morning, and coffee and tea are available throughout the day.
The owners updated the kitchen and living room. They added plush seating and vintage Italian light fixtures, antique rugs, and local artwork to the guest rooms and common areas. A game room was also added, as well as a new grand piano.
The team preserved the building’s original wooden millwork, fireplaces, turret, wood-paneled walls, inlaid wood flooring, carved bannisters, glass-enclosed front porch, and more.
The Library Suite was once the library of Joseph Stearns, the original owner of the home. The Maine native was the inventor of the duplex telegraph.
Visitors enjoy garden views and panoramic ocean views from the guest rooms, which sport names such as Arundel and Balmoral. Select rooms offer gas fireplaces, and the rooms have renovated marble baths.
A full service bar in the solarium connects to a terrace. Visitors enjoy small bites from Peruvian Chef Marymarcel Densmore during the busy season.
The Route 1 property was a private residence for a century before becoming a hotel in 1984.
The grounds includes two gazebos, a bocce court, and perennial gardens on four acres. A short walk from the inn is Camden Harbor, full of restaurants and shops.
