A reliable source shot down an earlier leak about the the two “standard’ iPhone 14 models including 120Hz ProMotion screens. This would have brought them closer in line with Apple’s Pro handsets that already have the feature.
This is an example of the challenges of making predictions about a handset that is still many months away.
Standard iPhone 14 and ProMotion: Yes/No
Late last week, an industry analyst went out on a limb by saying both the iPhone 14 and iPhone 14 Max will be upgraded with ProMotion displays. A 120Hz refresh rate would make the screens noticeably smoother when scrolling webpages, swiping through photos and playing games.
But Ross Young, the founder of DisplaySearch, threw cold water in the idea in a Twitter post this weekend. He says BOE Technology Group won‘t be capable of making 120Hz ProMotion displays for Apple this year. His comment implies that the Chinese component maker will be the exclusive supplier of screens for both iPhone 14 non-Pro models.
But he held out hope that the iPhone 15 standard models will have ProMotion.
No since BOE doesn’t have enough LTPO capacity and have yet to ship any LTPO panels. Would be quite risky. Maybe in 2023…

It’s early days
While an iPhone 14 series launch is surely more than half a year away, most of the details of the iOS handsets were set long ago. But there’s still room for some changes. If a component maker could supply Apple with a better feature at an acceptable cost, it could well go into the next handset.
In this case, its quite possible Apple has tested prototypes of non-Pro iPhone 14 units with 120Hz displays. And someone heard about this and made the jump from a test unit to a prediction, and the rumor spread
But if anyone can speak with certainty about a product not coming out for close to eight months, it’s Ross Young. His predictions about upcoming Apple products have so far been 100% accurate, according to AppleTrack.
