Erik ten Hag played a key role in Ralf Rangnick’s Manchester United downfall and was unwilling to work with the German as result of his numerous public outbursts.
Rangnick was slated to fill a consultancy role after fulfilling his duties as the club’s interim manager having stepped into the breach following the sacking of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in December.
The former Schalke manager, however, presided over a terrible run of form which saw United miss out on Champions League qualification and finish a turbulent campaign with their lowest ever Premier League points tally.
Rangick attempted to wash his hands of any responsibility by laying the blame for a series of wretched defeats at a disjointed and fractured squad, as well as his predecessors for squandering huge sums of money on inadequate players.
The 63-year-old was also frustrated after United’s board failed to sanction any transfers in the transfer window and was annoyed after watching Dusan Vlahovic, Luis Diaz and Julian Alvarez join rival clubs.
Despite such scathing public criticism, Rangick was hopeful of moving into an advisory role and working alongside Ten Hag.
According to ESPN, however, the former Ajax boss had no intention of collaborating with his predecessor and refused to even grant him the opportunity to engage in a formal handover.
Ten Hag was said to be particularly irked by Rangnick’s suggestion that the squad was in need of a near total overhaul with as many as 10 new signings required to revive the club’s ailing fortunes.
United have subsequently struggled to sign new players during the early part of the summer window with deals for the likes of Christian Eriksen, Frenkie de Jong and Antony stalling.
A clutch of players are due to return to Carrington next week ahead of pre-season training and Ten Hag will be hoping for some rapid progress in the transfer market before United embark on their tour of the Far East and Australasia.
