Sergio Aguero has predicted his fellow Argentine Enzo Fernandez to complete a move to the Premier League amid strong links with Chelsea.

Benfica midfielder Fernandez is pushing to join Chelsea before the end of the January transfer window, according to reports in Portugal.

Chelsea have been locked in negotiations with the Portuguese club for several weeks but have so far been unable to agree a deal for Argentina’s World Cup winner.

Fernandez, 22, has been the subject of intense interest from Chelsea, who were prepared to pay over his current €120m (£105m) release clause.

An offer of £112m was tabled but Chelsea asked for it to be paid in three yearly instalments, with Benfica adamant he would only leave if his clause was paid in full.

Chelsea also tried to tempt Benfica with an offer of £79m along with Hakim Ziyech and two other players on loan.

The transfer window is due to close on Tuesday night but former Manchester City striker Aguero is backing Fernandez to make a late switch.

‘Enzo has proven he can play in the top leagues of the world,’ Aguero told Stake.com.

‘From my understanding, it’ll be a short time until he arrives either to the Premier League or La Liga.

‘It’s a safe bet to say he’ll be the target of the biggest clubs out there. The thing is, the World Cup can be a great display window.

‘You can really tell who are the players that make a difference, and there’s obviously a boost to the champions too.

‘Maybe we’ll see Enzo Fernandez in the Premier League soon. The World Cup’s best young player award is nothing to scoff at.

‘There are many other players from Argentina that will show their worth soon. Brighton signing Buonanotte, Maximo Perrone arriving to my dear Manchester City.

‘There’s a new generation that is adding a lot to the Premier League and in numbers not seen before.’
