Tiger Woods thanks fans, golfers for 'helping me get through this tough time'

Tiger Woods thanked his fans and fellow golfers in his first public comments since his car crash last week after many wore Woods’ signature red polo and black pants combination at Sunday’s WGC-Workday Championship in Florida.

“It is hard to explain how touching today was when I turned on the tv and saw all the red shirts,” Woods wrote on Twitter. “To every golfer and every fan, you are truly helping me get through this tough time.”

Woods suffered multiple leg injuries in a single-car rollover crash near Los Angeles on Feb. 23. He underwent a lengthy surgery to repair a compound fracture in his right leg, with surgeons inserted a rod to stabilize the leg. Screws and pins were inserted into his ankle and foot, too.

On Feb. 26, a statement tweeted from Woods’ account said the golfer had been moved from Harbor-UCLA Medical Center to Cedars-Sinai Medical Center. There, he underwent successful follow-up procedures on his injuries and was “recovering and in good spirits.”

On Sunday, several golfers wore Woods’ traditional attire, including Tony Finau.

“I was pretty inspired,” Finau said, via ESPN. “I heard earlier quite a few guys were going to do it. I for sure felt like it would just be a nice touch. We’ve enjoyed so many Sundays watching Tiger do his thing. Red and black, that’s what Tiger does on Sundays, so to just join in and just let Tiger know we’re supporting him in the best way we can. We’re still playing as we miss him out here, but it was just cool to be part of that today.”
