Dramatic footage shows the moment a police car is hijacked during a routine traffic stop and then pursued by helicopter, before crashing on the railway tracks where it was struck by a train.

In footage of the incident, which includes body-worn cameras, officers are seen pulling the suspect, 29-year-old Mickal Parker, from the wreckage of the patrol car moments before it was hit by the train.

The incident happened on Saturday at around 2.09am when a police officer conducted a traffic stop in Atlanta, Georgia.

While the officer was speaking to the driver and letting him off with a caution, a person later identified as Parker entered the driver's seat of the officer's patrol car and drove away.

The police helicopter, which was already airborne, quickly found the stolen vehicle and directed officers on the ground.

The suspect lost control, the car flipped and came to rest partially on the nearby train tracks.

Officers managed to drag the suspect from the vehicle just seconds before an oncoming train struck it.

The suspect was taken into custody and charged with theft by taking, fleeing and alluding, reckless driving, obstruction, and damage to city property.
