Belarus FM meets with UN secretary general

MINSK, 27 September (BelTA) - Belarusian Minister of Foreign Affairs Vladimir Makei met with UN Secretary General Antonio Guterres in New York on 25 September, BelTA learned from the press service of the Belarusian Ministry of Foreign Affairs.

The agenda of the meeting included the issues related to the reformation of the organization, Belarus' contribution to increasing the role and importance of the UN in the world and some problematic aspects of the relations between Belarus and the UN.

Vladimir Makei congratulated Antonio Guterres on his appointment to another five-year term as UN Secretary General.

The parties hailed the traditionally high level and friendly nature of interaction between the Republic of Belarus and the UN. The secretary general confirmed his personal warm and respectful attitude to Belarus and expressed his readiness to continue productive and constructive cooperation in all areas.

The parties exchanged opinions on the international agenda issues. Vladimir Makei informed Antonio Guterres about the internal political situation in Belarus and the processes related to the discussion of constitutional transformations in the country.

The Belarusian minister of foreign affairs commented in detail on the false accusations heard from a number of countries against Belarus of provoking risks, including in the area of migration, spoke about the actual situation on the western border of Belarus and the close cooperation of the Belarusian side with the representative of the Office of the UN High Commissioner for Refugees.

The parties stressed the positive and constructive role of the initiatives of the Republic of Belarus in the UN, which contribute to stability in the world. Both sides confirmed their readiness to continue close, friendly contacts.

As BelTA reported earlier, Vladimir Makei is visiting New York on 21-28 September to attend the 76th session of the UN General Assembly.
