Man arrested on suspicion of drunken driving in City Heights crash that killed pedestrian

San Diego police said the 44-year-old victim ran into traffic shortly before the Thursday evening collision

A 20-yer-old man was arrested on suspicion of drunken driving after hitting and killing a pedestrian who ran into traffic in City Heights on Thursday, San Diego police said.

The collision was reported about 9:10 p.m. on El Cajon Boulevard near 50th Street.

Police said the 44-year-old man was running south across El Cajon before he stopped, turned around and ran back toward the curb, into the path of the driver.

The pedestrian suffered serious head trauma and was taken to a hospital where he died, police said. The driver was evaluated after the crash and was arrested.

The department’s Traffic Division is investigating.
