Hong Kong man shot by police after wild 8km car chase in 2021 sues force over injuries

A man shot by Hong Kong police in a dramatic car chase three years ago has filed a lawsuit against the force, claiming his injuries were caused by the officers’ negligence.
Plaintiff Hung Chun-kit filed a personal injury claim with the High Court on Wednesday over the shooting on April 8, 2021 in Sha Tin district.
Police had shot Hung in the shoulder after a wild 8km car chase. Officers had earlier stopped his car after its licence was found to have expired, but he sped off with police in pursuit.

Hung said in his claim that firing at his back was “totally reckless and grossly negligent” and asked the court to award him damages, among other items, to reflect the “serious and grievous bodily injuries” police had inflicted on him.
The amount Hung has asked for was not shown on the court document.
Hung, aged 45 at the time, was said to have been left in a critical condition after surgery to remove a bullet from his right shoulder.
Police had stopped Hung on Tolo Highway near Ma Liu Shui after discovering his car licence expired in 2015.
Dramatic clip captures police shooting after wild car chase in Hong Kong
A video circulated online at the time tracked the course of the chase and showed two officers drawing their guns as Hung rammed his car back and forth into other vehicles after his car was trapped in traffic.
An officer – whose face was not shown in the video – opened fire and his colleague was seen on the left side of the car pointing his gun and smashing a window with a baton.
Hung was jailed for three years after he pleaded guilty to five dangerous driving charges in October 2022.
