Sky Brown secured a bronze medal at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games after becoming Britain’s youngest summer medallist.

Brown, 13, was left in tears after she secured her place on the podium, producing a 56.47 in her final run to seal a medal in the women’s park final.

At 13 years and 23 days she became Great Britain’s youngest-ever summer Olympic medal winner, while she secured Britain’s first skateboarding medal.

She is the youngest British summer Olympian, eclipsing Margery Hinton’s longstanding record of 13 days and 43 days when she competed in swimming in the 1928 Games.

Tears of joy streamed from the youngster’s face, with her family also crying as they recognised the magnitude of their achievement.

Japan’s Sakura Yosozumi took the gold medal, while 12-year-old Kokona Hiraki claimed silver in a thrilling final at Ariake Skate Park.

Brown had fallen in her previous two runs but produced a superb final performance to climb into the medal positions.

The pressure was on Brown heading into her third and final run as she sat just outside the medal spots, which was dominated by three Japanese skaters, but she delivered a quality performance to climb into third.

There was a nervous wait as Misugu Okamoto, who could have still climbed above her, straight after but the 15-year-old fell, guaranteeing Brown would take bronze.

Yosozumi sealed gold with a 60.09, Hiraki produced 59.04 to earn silver and Brown registered a 56.47 to take bronze.

Earlier on, Brown put in an impressive display in the heats, posting the second highest score. And she backed that up in the finals in style.

Brown is no typical 13-year-old, she is a social media sensation, a published author and an American reality TV winner.

She was born just a month before the Beijing Olympics in 2008.

Remarkably, she was left fighting for her life just a year ago after suffering a horrendous fall in training.

She plunged 15ft off a ramp and was left with a fractured skull and with her arm in a cast but that didn’t put her off and she returned to skateboarding and has now claimed one of sport’s ultimate prizes.
