It's been a harrowing few days for family and friends waiting to hear accurate information on the impact of the Hunga Tonga Hunga Ha'apai volcano explosion near Tonga on Saturday.

The country's internet could be down for several weeks after the violent volcanic event cut the kingdom's only undersea communications cable, effectively isolating it from the outside world.

Southern Cross Cables, who are part of the collective working to repair the connection, say the damage is likely to take "weeks" to repair, despite cable being about "the size of a garden hose".

Chief Operating Officer Dean Veverka tells Raf Epstein the repairs may require "several kilometres of cable back into the network to put it together".

Listen in to how the the operation is being managed.
