Andy Cole claims Mason Mount ‘wouldn’t improve’ Manchester United as Erik ten Hag launches a summer move for the Chelsea midfielder.

United are believed to be leading the race to sign Mount, who is expected to leave Stamford Bridge after almost two decades at the club.

Mount has made 195 appearances for Chelsea since breaking into the first-team in 2019 and helped his boyhood club win the Champions League under Thomas Tuchel.

Arsenal and Liverpool have also been linked with Mount but Manchester United are at the front of the queue and will reportedly offer Harry Maguire in a deal to sign the Chelsea star.

But Old Trafford legend Cole has questioned United’s move for Mount and says his former club instead need a player with ‘X-factor and flair’.

‘None of the Chelsea players improve Manchester United,’ Cole told FA Cup Odds. ‘They can’t be any worse next season otherwise they’ll be in big trouble.

‘I know there’s talk of Mason Mount, he’s a decent player who works hard and puts a shift in.

‘But Manchester United need someone with that X-factor and has flair. Someone like Jude Bellingham who drives the team forward.’

Cole – who helped United win the treble in 1998-99 – has also given his take on Saturday’s FA Cup final involving his former side and Premier League champions Manchester City.

Victory for United would complete a domestic cup double, but City are eyeing a historic treble ahead of next weekend’s Champions League final against Inter Milan.

‘If Manchester City score early, they’ll go on to win the game comfortably,’ he said. ‘If Manchester United frustrates them and nicks a goal, they can win a game.

‘I have this feeling that Manchester United will win that game. No one seems to mention that the last time they played, Manchester United won, they played well and convincingly won. But anything can happen in the FA Cup, that’s the magic of it.

‘However you look at it, Manchester United will go into this game knowing we’ve achieved history by winning this cup and completing the treble.

‘Our neighbours have a great chance of matching the treble if they beat us. They have the club’s history and legacy on the line, it’s as simple as that.’
