A mass shooting outside a New Orleans nightclub left a 24-year-old woman dead and 11 injured on Sunday night.

Jezreel Aquilla Poleate was identified as the young woman who was killed outside The Republic NOLA, a popular live music venue in the center of New Orleans, NOLA.com reported.

'She was my only daughter,' Sharon Poleate, 64, said Thursday. 'She was loving, friendly, fashionable and she never met a stranger.'

Friends of Poleate told the local outlet she was among the group that was targeted by the shooter outside the club.

Authorities have also not released any information on the suspect nor the motive for the shooting.

The shooting happened at around 11:56pm, and of the eleven who were injured, six were women and five were men, according to the New Orleans Police Department. No information on them has been made available other than the fact that they've been taken to the hospital.

Poleate, who graduated from Helen Cox High School in 2018, was described as a hard worker by friends and family. She usually had two or three jobs, having worked events at Caesars Superdome, the home of the New Orleans Saints football team. More recently, she had started a new gig at a New Orleans bar.

Bria Smith, 22, and Mikia Gumms, 25, were friends of Poleate and grew up with her. Both of them spoke with NOLA.com. Smith reportedly learned about her close friend's death from social media.

'I just don't know the right words,' Smith told the outlet. 'She was definitely a loving person. She was so outspoken and funny, always cracking jokes. There was never a dull moment.'

NOLA.com reported that neither Smith nor Gumms went to the Republic club that night with Poleate, but Gumms said that two of her other friends were injured in the gunfire.

'This just feels so unreal,' Gumms told NOLA.com. 'Jezreel just messaged me on Friday. I'm flabbergasted.'

A family friend, Kinmont Garrett, 30, described Poleate as an 'amazing person' with 'a great spirit.' Garrett added she enjoyed hanging out with her friends but was part of a church-going family, NOLA.com reported.

A witness who was inside the club and heard the shots ringing out called the scene chaotic, local cable affiliate WDSU News reported.

'When I heard the shots, I ran to the bathroom and grabbed a couple people who were with me and kind of got low,' the witness said. 'We stayed until it got settled, but nobody knew what was next or if there would be more shots. There was a lot of panic and a lot of chaos.'

Another witness told NOLA.com she heard six or seven shots from her hotel, at first thinking it was fireworks. She added that 30 to 40 people were fleeing The Republic NOLA.

Republic NOLA is a Black-owned bar and the owner, Nick Thomas, spoke with WDSU, telling the outlet that the suspect was not a patron.

Thomas told NOLA.com that none of his staff were hurt in the shooting. At least four bullet holes were observed in the club's doors, he added.

Hip-hop artist Anycia performed at the club on the night of the shooting, according to Eventbrite.

This shooting comes just a week after a security guard was shot and killed outside Wit's Inn bar, which is several miles from The Republic NOLA.

Elected officials at the local level all the way up to the national level have responded to the shooting.

Louisiana Governor Jeff Landry issued the following statement: 'Sharon and I are praying for the victims and their families in this tragedy. We appreciate the first responders for their hard work. This type of violence has no place in our State.'

Democratic congressman Troy A. Carter from Louisiana's second district called the shooting a 'tragedy' and called for gun reform.

'We urgently need common-sense gun reform measures and violence reduction programs in our community; too many lives have been lost. I will not stop fighting for change so that we can feel safe in the city we love,' Carter wrote on X Monday morning.
