A gang of young thugs have locals terrified after an alleged unprovoked attack on a delivery driver.

The incident on Glebe Point Road in Glebe, in Sydney's Inner West, took place at about 1am on April 15 was filmed by a terrified bystander and shared to 2GB's Ben Fordham.

The video shows the delivery driver in a high-vis jacket surrounded by the thugs who rushed him and allegedly attempted to attack him.

A number of objects were allegedly thrown at the driver before he was forced to take off on foot with the thugs in hot pursuit.

Locals said the alleged incident is just the latest in a string of escalating incidents that have recently been occurring in the suburb.

A resident who has lived in the area for five years, Tim, told Fordham the incidents were becoming progressively worse.

'They'd been sitting there most of the night, drinking vodka. I found the remnants of a Smirnoff vodka bottle the next day,' he alleged.

'You've got a delivery driver just doing his job, they've (allegedly) set upon him.'

The footage shows a gang of bike-riding teens, described by Tim as 'reinforcements' who were allegedly called in by the others to join the attack.

A number of the incidents are said to have occurred near a local school and late night convenience store.

'I wouldn't go out at night unless I absolutely had to,' Tim added.

Police were called to the scene but the group had left before they arrived.

NSW Police Detective Chief Inspector Grant Watson insisted police 'want everyone to feel safe'.

'NSW Police Force Officers are doing everything they can to catch those responsible, but we need everyone to lay their part,' he said in a statement.

A 17-year-old boy was arrested last Wednesday in relation to the incident and charged with affray and driving a conveyance taken without the consent of the owner.

He has been granted conditional bail and is expected to appear in court on May 29.
