Keir Starmer trusts Angela Rayner over her tax advice and does not need to look into the details of her housing arrangements, ally claims

Keir Starmer does not need to look into the details of Angela Rayner's housing arrangements because he trusts her, a close ally claimed.

Labour's leader insisted yesterday he had 'complete confidence' in his deputy, despite not having seen the legal and tax advice she received in the row over the sale of her former council house that is being investigated by police.

His Shadow Cabinet colleague Ed Miliband suggested that asking to check her account would have made it look like he did have concerns.

Asked if it would signal more confidence if he looked at the advice, Mr Miliband said: 'I think if he had to say, "well, I need to check this up", I think it could send the opposite signal.'

But Tory Party chairman Richard Holden said: 'Starmer says it would be 'inappropriate', but it is unfathomable that Sir Keir, a noted KC and senior barrister, hasn't asked to see it in full.

'It's way beyond time for Sir Keir to show some leadership and instruct Ms Rayner to publish her legal advice.'

Ms Rayner joined Sadiq Khan yesterday ahead of his manifesto launch for the London mayoral election on May 2.

Meanwhile, on a visit to the North-East, Sir Keir said: 'I have complete confidence in her and the police investigation allows a line to be drawn in relation to this.'
